The hip joint is one of the most used joints in our body. It is a type of synovial ball and socket joint that helps us sit, stand, and walk. The hip joint is made from the articulation between the femoral head and the acetabulum. A hip fracture is a condition characterized by a break in the upper part of the femur. This is a severe condition that always requires surgical intervention. Orthopedic Implants made to be used for hip fractures are often used for treatment. In this post, we will shed some light on the diagnosis and treatment of the condition.

What Are the Symptoms of Hip Fractures?

Fractures are always painful and people also experience intense pain when a break occurs. Some of the common signs and symptoms associated with fractures in the hip joint include:

  • Inability to walk or stand
  • Intense pain in the hip and groin
  • Difficulty in putting weight on the injured side of the leg
  • Swelling and bruising around the hip joint
  • The leg on the fractured side of the hip appears shorter than the uninjured one
  • The leg on the injured side of the hip may turn outward

What Causes Hip Fractures?

High-intensity trauma often causes hip fractures in adults. Traumas may include:

  • Automobile crash
  • Contact sports injuries
  • Falling from a height
  • Sudden twisting of the leg while running

In the elderly or people suffering from osteoporosis, hip fractures may occur because of a slight fall or mild injuries. In some cases, a hip fracture may even occur when someone twists his/her leg while in a standing position.

How Hip Fractures Are Diagnosed?

The diagnosis of fractures in the hip requires a thorough physical examination where the healthcare service provider will look for swelling, deformity, and bruising. Sometimes, the orthopedic specialist will also ask the patient to walk or stand to examine the ability to put weight on the injured side of the hip. Besides the physical examination, the healthcare service provider will also order some imaging tests to confirm the fracture and assess its severity. The imaging tests that will be ordered include:

  • X-ray examination will show bone images and depict if there is a break
  • MRI examination may be ordered in some cases to produce pictures of the non-bony parts around the joint

What is the Treatment for Hip Fractures?

Fractures in the hip often require surgery and the type of surgery required depends on the severity of the condition. Here are the surgical options available for the treatment:

Internal FixationIf the fracture is not severe the orthopedic specialist may suggest internal fixation where orthopedic screws, plates, or pins are applied for stabilization. During internal fixation, the implant plate applied runs down the femur.

Total Hip Replacement Severe hip fractures with damage to both the ball and socket need a total hip replacement. In this condition, a hip prosthesis is used. The surgery involves the removal of both the ball and the socket.

Partial Hip Replacement Partial hip replacement surgery involves the replacement of the ball portion of the hip joint. Hence, the socket remains intact. This surgery is often recommended for adults with some other health problems.
